I think that Frischer’s basic argument that the survival of research libraries depends on the implementation of new technology and that this implementation requires strategic planning doesn’t sound that controversial. His discussion of the three consequences of digital technology for the research library and how he proposed to deal with then was a unique way to address the debate about the future of the library. Frischer was very concerned with bringing people into the physical space of the library which is a huge task considering that part of the attraction of digitalization is being able to work from anywhere and especially at home. Another problematic issue in the section about improving the quality of the library experience was the idea that perhaps users could be able to find out who or where a particular resource was being used. I realize that the example is trying to get the concept of making the library a more social space but part of me wonders if some users would still like the traditional “isolating” desks.

Frischer’s idea of the popularizing VR labs in libraries seems problematic is some big ways. I understand that he is looking for ways to expand on the digital format in a way that makes it unique to use by libraries. VR labs seem to have a very particular use and may not appeal to all disciplines not to mention the high cost and low demand. Even if these labs did enter libraries would they be useful enough and attract enough people to keep the institution relevant?
